Zonta Yellow Rose recipient feted


ROME — MSgt. Della Pray, a Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps instructor at Rome Free Academy, received the Zonta Yellow  Rose Award for outstanding community service at a luncheon last Saturday at the Franklin Hotel, 301 S. James St.

Mistress of Ceremonies Penny Lee Davies welcomed guests. Dr. Patricia DeMatteo gave the Invocation.

Family, friends, colleagues and community leaders honored Pray. Mayor Jacqueline M. Izzo presented Pray with a city proclamation. Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, D-119, Marcy, presented a New York State Proclamation, speaking of Pray’s commitment and dedication to her students and community. Senator Joseph A. Griffo, R-47, Rome, offered his congratulations.

Among the honored guests were Peter C. Blake, superintendent of Rome City School District, and Herbert Thorpe, retired 2nd Lt. Tuskegee Pilot during World War II.

Former Zonta Rose Award recipients attending were Marge VanSlyke, Janet Bennet, Sandra Gerhardt and Carla Till.

Zonta President Dr. Camille Dillard addressed Zonta Clubs International about national and local issues concerning the struggles and challenges of young girls and women in the world today.
