A young boater safety certificate course will be held at the Central New York Boat Show in Syracuse on Saturday, Feb. 18.

The free course certifies children ages 10 to 17 to legally operate a motorized boat or watercraft alone on New York waters, officials said. Youths must successfully complete the 8-hour training and same-day proctored exam to receive certification.

The class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Expo Center at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse. The instructor will be Peter Wiles, a past commander of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 21.

Registration is required ahead of the class. To register, visit the website https://register-ed.com/events/view/193405 or call 315-447-8077.

Each youth registering for the safety course will also receive three free admission passes to the Central New York Boat Show, which runs from Feb. 16-19.
