American author Thomas Wolfe wrote a book in the 1930s called “You Can’t Go Home Again.” The main character in the book couldn’t go home again, but that isn’t true for everyone.
Dr. Michael Siegenthaler, for instance.
Dr. Siegenthaler recently returned to the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill School District and enthralled fifth graders at the J.D. George Elementary School. He was a guest speaker, but not just any guest speaker.
He was visiting his fifth-grade teacher’s classroom to lead a lesson for teacher Hope Dalzell’s students. He was in the very first class she ever taught.
“It’s nice coming back to my home community,” said the physician who joined the TriValley Family Practice in Canastota in August, where he is board-certified in family medicine.
And, the visit wasn’t just rewarding for Dr. Siegenthaler — the students were delighted too. “They are so engaged,” remarked Dalzell. Class member Ryan Hastings noted: “Having a guest speaker come in is pretty cool.”
The students were excited to display their knowledge of the circulatory system to a real doctor, one who certainly could come home again.
