The HomeOwnershipCenter of Utica plans a free workshop on owning a home hosted by the Utica Municipal Housing Authority at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Utica Public Library in the Second Floor Music Room.
The HOC’s Homeownership Center Manager, Kristen Graves, will be give a summarized version of the Home Buyer Education class covering the steps to take to become a successful home owner. Information on the different down payment assistance options that are available will be presented as well.
Statistics show that consumers who use federally approved housing counseling services have 30 percent lower odds of foreclosure.

In the 2017-2018 fiscal year alone, the center educated 168 households and created 55 successful homeowners. Of the 55 homes purchased, HOC assisted 38 households with down payment and closing cost assistance.

The UMHA Utica Public Library Outreach Center, which provides workshops on housing, jobs, and financial literacy, operates Monday and Tuesday evenings. The center also offers computer training. The program is funded by the U.S. Corporation for National and Community Service, New York State Commission on National and Community Service, and the United Way of the Valley and the Utica Area.
