NEW HARTFORD — A book about the 2015 beating death of a teen at the Word of Life Christian Church in Chadwicks will be released Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Barnes and Noble Booksellers at Consumer Square, 4811 Commercial Drive, will host a special author talk and signing from 6-8 p.m.
“Without a Prayer: The Death of Lucas Leonard and How One Church Became a Cult,” by Susan Ashline, tells of the killing of Lucas Leonard by nine members of his church, including his parents and sister.
The book is author Ashline’s first work, and is already receiving national acclaim. Without a Prayer has earned a starred review in both Publisher’s Weekly and Library Journal, two of the most powerful literary trade magazines in the nation. A starred review denotes a book of exceptional merit.
During Tuesday’s presentation at Barnes and Noble, audience members will hear from individuals who are featured in the book: Kristel Leonard, the victim’s sister; Helen Lehrer, a former Word of Life cult member; Dave Cady, an investigator with the Oneida County District Attorney’s office; Anthony Sokolowsi, a former intern with the DA’s office; and Rich Dibble, an Anglican priest who attempted to deprogram defendant Bruce Leonard, the victim’s father. These Individuals will take questions from the audience, and an author book signing will follow.
