Women’s organizations topic of talk Wednesday
ROME — Rome Historical Society, 200 Church St., will host, in its auditorium, the program, “Women’s Organizations of Rome NY,” with Diane Miller, at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 15.
In recognition of Women’s History Month, Miller will present her program on the rise of women’s social organizations at the turn of the 20th century. In an era in which women did not possess equal rights and were viewed differently than men, was it these conditions which propelled them to form associations outside their homes and families? What form did these organizations, which sprung from these conditions, take?
Miller will examine the histories of several of these women’s clubs, which were formed in Rome, and that played a pivotal role in so many lives of the city’s women and which continue to do so today. Miller holds membership in two of these durable organizations. Miller said she’s a keen lover of history and the characters who existed among its dusty decades. Miller seeks to answer the question: Why did grandmother remove her apron and head out the door the same day every week?
