TOWN OF DIANA — A Wayne County woman was killed when her all-terrain vehicle swerved to avoid an oncoming pickup truck in Lewis County Friday.
State police said Tammy J. Shears, 53, of Savannah, was eastbound on North Shore Road at 12:53 p.m. operating a 2013 Suzuki ATV with a passenger. Troopers said Shears went around a sharp curve and entered the path of an oncoming 2018 Dodge pickup truck.
Troopers said Shears swerved to avoid the truck, causing the ATV to overturn. Shears and her passenger, 28-year-old Bailey R. Dougherty, of Sodus Point, were both ejected from the ATV.
Shears was pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said. Dougherty was air-lifted to University Hospital in Syracuse with severe leg injuries, authorities said. The driver of the truck, 20-year-old Isaiah S. Young, of Gouverneur, was not injured.
Troopers said the investigation is continuing.
