UTICA — A 30-year-old woman is accused of trying to run down several people with her motor vehicle Wednesday night, while both drunk and with a toddler in the back seat, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said Dezzarae Gaines, 30, of Utica, was intoxicated behind the wheel when she attempted to run down several pedestrians with her vehicle in the 1500 block of Oneida St. at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday. Police said Gaines’ vehicle instead hit several parked cars and came to rest after crashing into a tree.

Several Utica Police investigators were driving by when it happened and witnessed the crash. Authorities said another woman then ran to the driver side window and got into a fight with Gaines, until the officers separated the two.

Police said a 3-year-old child was found in the back seat of Gaines’s vehicle. The child was unharmed and was turned over to a relative who arrived on the scene.

Gaines is charged with attempted second-degree assault, criminal mischief, fourth-degree possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child, driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI and several vehicle and traffic violations, police said.

She is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
