Woman defends self against alleged knife threat in Utica
UTICA — A 23-year-old man is facing multiple charges after threatening his ex-girlfriend with a knife on Oneida Street on Monday, according to the Utica Police Department.
Police said Zy-Aire J. Brooks-Barlow, of Utica, knocked on his ex-girlfriend's door in the 1400 block of Oneida Street around 12:30 p.m. Monday. When she opened the door, police said Brooks-Barlow pointed a knife at her chest and threatened her with it.
Fearing for her life, police said the ex immediately fought back and disarmed Brooks-Barlow. Then she locked herself back in her apartment and Brooks-Barlow fled, authorities stated.
Brooks-Barlow was found a short distance away and was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit, police said.
Brooks-Barlow is charged with one count each of first-degree menacing, first-degree contempt and third-degree possession of a weapon, police stated. Brooks-Barlow has a prior menacing conviction within the past 10 years, authorities said, so his menacing charge was upgraded. The incident was also in violation of an order of protection, police noted. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
