TOWN OF LENOX — A Madison County woman has been charged with lying to the Department of Social Services and unlawfully receiving nearly $9,000 over two years.

Sheriff’s deputies said Brittany E. Grevelding, 34, of Erieville, applied for public assistance in January 2017 and lied on the paperwork that she did not have any income and that the father of her child was not living with her.

The Sheriff’s Office investigated and they said that both of those claims were a lie.

Authorities said Grevelding unlawfully received $8,792 between February 2017 and January 2019. She was taken into custody on Tuesday.

Grevelding is charged with one count each of third-degree welfare fraud, third-degree grand larceny and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing, all felonies, authorities said. She was arraigned in Town Court and was released on her own recognizance.

She is scheduled to reappear in court.
