Winter weather advisory in place for region

BINGHAMTON — Less than a week removed from sunny skies and temperatures in the 60s, Mother Nature is expected to drop a wintry mix on the region tonight into Wednesday, according to a hazardous weather outlook released by the National Weather Service’s Binghamton office.

“This will be the first widespread winter weather this season and will likely have impacts on the Wednesday morning commute,” including slippery road conditions, the National Weather Service advisory states. The report adds that Wednesday’s ride home should be less adventuresome as rising temperatures — the mid 40s — should help to clear roads by the afternoon.

Nearly all of Central New York will see at least an inch of snow, forecasters said, and six inches or more could fall at higher elevations, especially on Tug Hill as lake effect snow could begin to pile up.

This snow will initially come from a low pressure system off the Atlantic Coast combined with some cold air from the west. That system will bring a mix of snow, rain and freezing rain, forecasters said, starting late this afternoon into tonight.

As that system moves away, more cold air could blow in Wednesday, generating some additional lake effect snow that the National Weather Service says could fall in narrow bands. While up to six inches is possible in those bands in the Tug Hill Region, some two to five inches of snow is predicted for several areas in the region, including both the Northern and Southern Oneida County zones, along with portions of Madison County. The winter weather advisory expires at 1 p.m. Wednesday.

More snow, including lake effect snow, may stick around on and off through the weekend, the weather service said.
