ROME — William H. “Sarge” Moonen, 79, of S. Madison St., passed away at his home on Sunday, March 21, 2021.

He was born August 19, 1941, in Wampsville, NY, a son of Jerome and Edith Philo Moonen and was a graduate of Oneida High School. He was a veteran who served his country during the Vietnam Conflict. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps and later joined the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1981. On December 5, 1970, William married Gloria Stevenson in San Diego, CA, a loving union of over 32 years until she predeceased him on February 11, 2003. “Sarge” drove a school bus for the Birnie Bus Company and later worked at TLC in Oriskany until retiring. He loved fishing, hunting and driving on back roads exploring the countryside. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Rome.

Surviving are his children, Kelle Moonen and fiancé, Kevin Sutton of Rome; Kimberley and David Gwin of Rome; Gail Taft, James and Sharon Hunter, all of FL; a sister, Anne Namishia of TN; grandchildren, Joshua, Ronald, Cody, William, II, Tony, Shawn, Jr., Natalie, Gracie and Ginnie; 13 great-grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are private at the convenience of his family.
