Whitestown, the top seed in the District V American Legion baseball playoffs, broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning then held off Utica Post for a 4-3 win Thursday.

Whitestown, the top seed in the District V American Legion baseball playoffs, broke a 2-2 tie in the fourth inning then held off Utica Post for a 4-3 win Thursday.

Whitestown scored a run in the second and another in the third. Utica tied the game with two in the top of the fourth. But Whitestown rebounded with two in the fourth to lead 4-2. Utica cut the lead to one in the sixth but could not get the game tied again.

Kody Czternastek threw a complete game to earn the win, improving to 4-0 this season. He allowed three earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out three.

Ty Montrose had a single and double with two runs scored for Whitestown. Jacob Colea had two hits and an RBI. Ty Kane singled twice.

Statistics for Utica were not submitted.

Whitestown improves to 17-2 and faced Smith Post of Rome in the winners’ bracket finals Friday night. Results were not available at press time.

Utica, 9-9, falls to the elimination bracket, where the team played New Hartford Friday. Utica won 7-6 though game details were not available.

Smith Post earns win with big inning

Smith Post of Rome scored seven runs in the top of the second inning and went on to defeat host Ilion Post 9-4 Thursday in the second round of the District V American Legion baseball playoffs.

The win by the three seed knocks second-seeded Ilion into the elimination bracket. Smith advances to the winners’ bracket finals against top seed Whitestown.

Derek Holmes had two hits, a run and three RBIs for Smith. Teamamte PJ Summa had two hits and two RBIs. Marco Macri had a single and triple, with a run and a run batted in.

On the mound, Macri started for Smith, going three innings and allowing four earned runs on three hits and five walks. He struck out two. Holmes earned the win in relief, going four scoreless innings while allowing three hits and a walk.

Noah Carpenter suffered the loss, allowing seven runs, two of them earned, in three innings. He surrendered seven hits and walked two batters. Offensively for Ilion, Ayden Miller had a single and double with two RBIs.

Ilion played an elimination game against Adrean Post Friday. Results were not available at press time.

Adrean and New Hartford stay alive

New Hartford Post and Adrean Post won their elimination bracket games Thursday to stay alive in the District V American Legion playoffs.

New Hartford eliminated Moran Post of Camden with a 5-4 win on the road. Game details were not available.

Adrean Post of Utica knocked Oriskany Post out of the tournament with an 11-1 win at home. Game details were not available.
