WESTMORELAND — Westmoreland Central School District Music Department is hosting the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) Zone 4 Area All-State Music Festival with performances scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The festival will feature approximately 200 of the finest student musicians from high schools in Oneida, Herkimer and Oswego counties, which make up “Zone 4” of NYSSMA, according to area event organizers. The students were selected based on their NYSSMA solo scores and teacher recommendations.

As part of the festival, student musicians will participate in one of four ensembles – string orchestra, concert band, mixed choir and treble choir. A guest conductor will lead each ensemble and rehearsed with the student musicians on Friday. The festival will conclude with all four ensembles performing a concert in the Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School Gymnasium on Saturday:

String Orchestra and Concert Band Concert — Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School Gym, 2 p.m.

Treble Choir and Mixed Choir Concert* — Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School Gym, 3:30 p.m.

Additional rehearsals will proceed both concerts.

Both the instrumental and choral concerts are open to the public. Tickets are $4 for adults and $3 for students and seniors, and may be purchased at the door.

“We are honored and excited the NYSSMA Zone 4 Area All-State Music Festival is taking place at Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School,” said Emily Davis, Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School music teacher. “It is a rare opportunity for a school of our small size to host such a large and prestigious event. These students represent the best of music education in upstate New York, and it is a thrill to provide the gateway for live music collaboration and performance in our schools once again.”

Thirteen students from Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School were selected to participate in the festival:

Concert Band – Gavin Haggerty, Katherine Hansson, David Huyck, Natalie Robinson and Jase Smith;

Mixed Choir – Tyler Crumb, Allison Davis, Owen Davison, Nathanael Larish and Sophia Larish; and

Treble Choir – Margaret Edwards, Alessandra Feldman and Julia Hutchins.

Nearly 30 Westmoreland Jr./Sr. High School music students will be volunteering their time during the festival to assist with hosting duties.
