WESTMORELAND — The Westmoreland-Oriskany football team scored in both overtimes and got an extra point on that second score to squeak out a 27-26 victory at home over Jamesville-Dewitt Saturday to open its season.
The Bulldogs led 6-0 at halftime on a two-yard touchdown run by quarterback David Piersall.
J-D scored two third quarter touchdowns to take the lead, a 25-yard run by Ryan Vespi and then a 5-yard pass from Lance Allen to Vespi.
The Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth quarter when Sean Klopfanstein ran one in from 14 yards out. He ran in a two-point conversion to tie the game and it would head to overtime.
In the first overtime, the Bulldogs scored on a one-yard touchdown run by Aiden Fabbio but the two-point conversion attempt — a running play — failed. When Jamesville scored they missed an extra point which would have been the game winner.
In the second overtime, J-D scored a touchdown, Ryan Vespi's fourth of the game on a 1-yard run but the extra point kick again was off. Then Piersall ran in a score from a yard out and Patrick Roberts kicked the game-winning extra point.
Fabbio had 85 yards rushing and a touchdown for Westmoreland-Oriskany. Piersall passed for 77 yards and ran in two scores. Nolan Bryant ran for 79 yards and caught one pass for 21 yards for the team. Jaden Oshel led the team with 34 yards receiving. Defensively, Klopfanstein led the Bulldogs with seven tackles. Bryant had four tackles and an interception.
The unified Westmoreland-Oriskany team plays next at home at 1 p.m. Saturday against Adirondack.
