Westmoreland girls basketball program to help in cancer fight

WESTMORELAND — The Westmoreland Central School Girls Basketball program is fighting cancer “one game at a time” as it teams up with More Than a Game Foundation to host the third annual Hoops for Hospital benefit Saturday, Jan. 19.

Westmoreland Girls Basketball will host rival Oriskany for a series of benefit games to raise money in support of the fight against cancer.

The games, which will be played in the junior/senior high school gymnasium, are scheduled to tip-off at the following times:

Modified B Game – 10 a.m.

Modified A Game – 11:30 a.m.

Jr. Varsity Game – 1:30 p.m.

Varsity Game – 3 p.m.

The “More Than a Game Foundation” is a Syracuse-based non-profit that teams up with local schools to organize “Hoops for Hospital” benefit games and tournaments in all sports to raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer. All money raised stays local, and this year, the Westmoreland Girls Basketball program is donating proceeds to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital in Syracuse.

“We are so proud of the relationship we have formed with the More Than a Game Foundation,” said Jerrid Otis, head coach of the Westmoreland Girls Varsity Basketball team. “There truly is so much more to life than basketball, and with the More Than a Game Foundation’s help, we are able to contribute to an important cause. The ability to make a difference and impact lives in a positive way is empowering and also an important life-lesson for our players.”

Last season, the Westmoreland Girls Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams, in conjunction with the “More Than a Game Foundation,” raised $5,000. This year, Westmoreland’s modified teams are joining the cause, with a goal of raising $7,500.

“We are excited that our efforts are now a program initiative,” Otis said. “Hopefully, it will allow us to raise even more money.”

For the games scheduled on Jan. 19, Westmoreland’s players will wear special purple warm-up shirts.

All proceeds from general admission, concessions, basket raffles, a bake sale and 50/50 raffle will be donated to Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital. Donations can also be made, in advance, to a Westmoreland Girls Basketball Program player or coach.
