The top-seeded Westmoreland baseball team scored seven runs in the opening two innings en route to a 14-4 win over eight-seed Mount Markham in a Section III Class C quarterfinal game Thursday.

Westmoreland improved to 16-0 overall this season with the victory.

Hunter Kierpiec earned his ninth win of the season on the mound after allowing 11 hits and three earned runs with six strikeouts and a walk in five innings. Caleb Miller allowed a hit and no runs with two strikeouts and a walk in two innings.

Offensively, Westmoreland was helped by Jerry Fiorini, who was 2-for-3 with two singles, two runs batted in and three runs. He was also hit by a pitch.

Miller added a single, two walks, two stolen bases and three runs for Westmoreland, which had 11 hits.

Owen Davison and Carson Nestved each added two runs batted in.

Westmoreland advances to play 12th-seed Lafayette in the semifinals at 7 p.m. today at Murnane Field in Utica.

Late rally helps Adirondack

The No. 11 seed Adirondack baseball team scored two runs in the top of the seventh inning to earn a 4-2 upset win over No. 3 Pulaski in the Section III Class C quarterfinal game Thursday.

Colin White allowed five hits and one earned run with six strikeouts and four walks in the complete game win.

He also went 3-for-4 and connected on a home run as Adirondack (10-11) totaled 11 hits. He had an RBI.

Jake Khouri had a double and RBI while Brett Sanford added a triple and an RBI.

Adirondack advances to play tenth-seeded Bishop Ludden with a game scheduled for 4 p.m. today at Murnane Field.

Early lead helps Oriskany

Second-seeded Oriskany plated eight runs in the first three innings and cruised to an 11-3 win over Mater Dei Academy in the Section III Class D quarterfinal game on Thursday.

Chase Koenig struck out eight batters while allowing four hits and a run in six innings on the mound for Oriskany.

Ty Zizzi and Eddie Wright each drove in two runs to help Oriskany (15-3 overall), which had seven hits. Karsten Bates and Anthony Kernan each totaled three walks. Kernan also had three stolen bases.

Oriskany is scheduled to play sixth-seed Brookfield (15-5) in the semifinals at 10 a.m. today at Murnane Field in Utica.

VVS takes extended game

It took 11 innings and playing on two separate days, but 18th-seeded Vernon-Verona-Sherrill is moving on.

VVS scored twice in the top of the 11th inning Friday morning and earned a 14-12 win over Solvay.

The game started Thursday but was halted because of darkness after the teams were tied after nine innings.

No individual stats were available.

VVS (7-12 overall) is set to play third-seed Westhill at 10 a.m. today at Onondaga Community College in Syracuse.
