Western Town Library seeks community support to replace worn, aging playground equipment

WESTERNVILLE — The Board of Trustees for the Western Town Library is seeking community support for a fundraising campaign to replace the library’s aging and deteriorated playground equipment, according to an announcement Thursday by the organization.

The library effort is part of the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties 24-hour day of community giving, “Mohawk Valley Gives,” on Tuesday, Sept. 20, to benefit local nonprofits serving the two counties.

Online donations may be made at any time through Tuesday by opening www.givemv.org, searching for Western Town Library, and completing a quick online donation. In-person donations may be made by mail to PO Box 247, Westernville, NY 13486 or through walk-ins at the front desk of the Western Town Library, 9172 Main St.

The library play area provides an important community gathering point and offers outdoor recreation opportunities for local children, the announcement said, adding that replacing the playground with updated, safer equipment is a major project with a significant community impact.

The community was struck by a series of natural disasters in 2021 – a EF-1 tornado and three successive floods – and at this time when so many in the community are focused on recovery, the library is seeking support to help renew the playground as an important resource for the community’s youngest residents.

The trustee’s fundraising goal is $60,000.

The board launched the fundraising project after the Jeremiah O McCarthy Family Foundation Inc. provided a donation a few days after the tornado in 2021. The board added it has $28,300 in grant donations recently committed/received to date from Griffin Charitable Foundation, Hazen B. Hinman Foundation, Kenneth V. and Jeannette Remp Sawyer Community Fund of the Northern New York Community Foundation, Rome United Way Foundation, and The Edwin J. Wadas Foundation.

Site preparation work will start later this fall to remove the old playground.

With a need to place the order for the playground by the end of the year, the Board is turning to the community to help meet this critical deadline through Mohawk Valley GIVES.

To date, there are $1,700 in sponsor pledges, who will provide a dollar-for-dollar match up to $1,700 for all community donations. These sponsor pledges are provided by $1,000 Platinum Sponsor Camroden Golf Course; $500 Gold Sponsor Western Town Library Board of Trustees; $250 Silver Sponsor Rapke Law Firm; $100 Bronze Sponsors Eggan Excavating & Equipment CO., Inc, Hubbard Tool & Die Corp., Kringle Christmas Tree Farm, and G. J. Olney Inc.; and $50 Friend Sponsor Rome Teachers Federal Credit Union.
