The Common Council will meet Wednesday, with a work session at 6 p.m. before its regular meeting at 7 at City Hall.
The work session will cover the Town of Verona’s request for city water.
The city and town jointly announced the possibility last week. There will likely be a Memorandum of Understanding in front of the council at its Feb. 28 meeting to further explore water expansion to Verona. city officials said.
The council will also be able to vote to issue decisions on two environmental impact studies: the proposed Humane Society of Rome site in the Erie Canal Village parking lot and the Waterfront Village infrastructure
project near the Erie Canal between the James and Mill Street bridges.
Both pieces of legislation state there would be no significant environmental impacts made by the projects.
The Society is proposing to build a 13,000 square foot facility at the north end of the Village’s parking lot on Rome-New London Road, on land owned by the city.
There would be an asphalt parking area and a storm water management system.
Waterfront Village is paired with the proposed housing complex at the site of the former DeWitt Clinton school on Ann Street, and extends to the canal’s waterfront between the bridges.
The site covers 15.28 acres south of downtown with frontage along the canal and Mohawk River. It’s about 3,300 feet between the bridges.
The environmental review form from the city noted: “Development of the waterfront will include construction of a bulkhead and dock system along the Erie Canal, as well as public walkways and seating areas, utility infrastructure, and stormwater management practices. The proposed infrastructure improvements will consist of roadway extensions, utility extensions, and streetscape improvements which will enable future development of properties not currently served by public infrastructure as well as provide aesthetic enhancements and improve pedestrian access along the existing streets.”
There is also legislation on the agenda for a $100,000 grant the city has received from the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority for purchase of three to four electric vehicles.
These would replace older vehicles already in the fleet.
