Waste facility accepts variety of hazardous household materials
UTICA — The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority will open its Household Hazardous Waste Facility on Friday April 1. Household hazardous wastes will be accepted at the Authority’s Utica EcoDrop location, 80 Leland Ave., 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.
The facility gives residents of Oneida and Herkimer counties the opportunity to dispose of many unused, unwanted, or outdated products. The following are acceptable materials:
Oil-based and latex paints (If bringing in paint, officials remind that only liquid paint will be accepted; empty paint cans or cans with hardened paint are garbage items and should be placed in the garbage with their lids removed);
Paint thinners;
Chemistry sets;
Cleaning solvents, degreasers;
Drain cleaners;
Fertilizers;
Furniture stripper;
Glues/sealants;
Herbicides;
Insecticides and pesticides (including those banned, such as DDT and Chlordane);
Kerosene;
Oven cleaners;
Photographic chemicals;
Polishes;
Pool chemicals;
Rust preventatives, removers;
Unusable gasoline;
Wood preservatives;
Fluorescent light bulbs;
Rechargeable batteries;
Mercury thermostats;
Automobile and motorcycle batteries;
Sharps (syringes/lancets);
Cooking oil and grease from deep fryers;
Antifreeze;
Motor oil and oil filters;
Empty propane cylinders (under 100 lbs.); and
Computer equipment (monitors, CPUs, printers, toner, ink cartridges).
