VVS girls eliminated from Class B basketball tourney


The No. 15 seed Vernon-Verona-Sherrill girls basketball team had its season come to an end with a 48-39 loss to seventh-seeded Bishop Grimes on the road Wednesday night in a Section III Class B quarterfinal game.

The Red Devils, who finished their season at 12-11, were led by Anna Rossi and Alexa Kiser with nine points each. Kiser also had nine rebounds and six blocks.

The Cobras, who improved to 16-6, were paced by Brianna Squier with 17 points and Abby Wilkinson chipped in 14 points.

Bishop Grimes, which led 28-21 at halftime, will play No. 3 South Jefferson (21-1) in a Class B semifinal on Sunday afternoon at 3:15 at Onondaga Community College’s Allyn Hall Gymnasium.

Clinton to play Auburn

Clinton will face Auburn in the Division II boys hockey finals on Monday night at 5 at the War Memorial in Syracuse.

Auburn edged New Hartford 3-2 in overtime in a Division II semifinal on Wednesday.

Clinton upset top-seed Cortland-Homer 3-0 in the other semifinal contest on Tuesday.

In the Division I semis on Wednesday night, Baldwinsville advanced by winning a shootout against undefeated West Genesee after the teams battled to a 1-1 tie after four overtimes, and Syracuse defeated Cicero-North Syracuse, 6-1,
