Volunteers sought for snow shoveling program to assist older adults
UTICA — 50 Forward Mohawk Valley and the Oneida County Office for the Aging have partnered again this year on a volunteer snow shoveling program, according to an announcement Wednesday by 50 Forward MV.
“We have older adults in our community who are unable to shovel walkways and entrances into their homes, especially after a heavy snowfall; and are also unable to afford to pay someone to shovel,” the announcement said. “50 Forward Mohawk Valley has partnered with the Oneida County Office for the Aging once again to recruit volunteers who are willing to help with this program. Volunteers will be matched with older adults in their community, and will provide an invaluable service to these community members.”
Those that are interested in volunteering for the snow shoveling program should contact the 50 Forward Volunteer Resource Center at 315-235-2029.
“There is a great need for this service and we had some amazing volunteers that helped last year and our hopes are to see this program continue to grow throughout the county as snow removal is particularly challenging for our seniors and providing this volunteer service has great impact in helping them remain independent,” said Kelly Walters, 50 Forward’s executive director.
“Our seniors are facing many challenges during these difficult times, and Oneida County is always here to help in any way we can,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr. “Volunteering to shovel their driveways and walkways is a small way to make a big difference, and I know that there are many in our community who will step up to help. I commend the Parkway Center for spearheading this effort.”
For more than 60 years, 50 Forward has been committed to providing programs and services to individuals age 50 and older, empowering them to live healthy vibrant lives. For more information on the organization and its programs, go online to www.theparkwaycenter.org or call 315-223-3973.
