OLD FORGE — View, the center for arts and culture at 3273 Route 28, is launching three online workshops, starting April 11.
These multi-week classes will allow people to learn a new skill while adhering to all necessary isolation and social distancing guidelines. The workshops currently being offered are: “Secrets of Great Narrative Writing,” “Mending Embroidery,” and “Essential Oils.”
• In “Secrets of Great Narrative Writing,” instructor David Hazard will help participants understand the powerful “under-structures” on which professional authors build their stories. It will take participants through storyboarding, structuring a story in terms of “acts,” scene building, and character building.
From this four-session workshop, participants will take away the ability to create a strong story outline and understanding of how to create compelling scenes and characters. The writing class will take place April 11, 18, 25 and May 2, from 10 a.m. to noon. Price for the class is $40 for guests and $30 for View members. The registration deadline is April 9.
• In Niki English’s three-session workshop called “Mending Embroidery,” participants will learn the art of Shashiko, a pre-industrial Japanese technique of mending garments with beautiful and artful stitches. Participants will learn the basic stitch for Shashiko, as well as how to create a geometric pattern, transfer a pattern to fabric, and how to adapt the pattern to the specific repair.
Participants will be working on their own garment to add stitches to a pocket or highlight features of the garment in some way. The sessions will be on April 14, 21 and 28 from 4-6 p.m. Pricing for the class is $73 if the participant needs a kit of necessary sewing materials sent to them, or $65 if they have their own materials. Pre-registration is required and space is limited.
• “Essential Oils” pairs participants with Becky Jones, founder of North Country Health & Wellness, for a four-session workshop where they will learn the many uses of these special oils. Each session will have a different topic: Intro to Essential Oils and how to use them in everyday life, Natural Solutions (for cleaning solutions, pest control, and sanitizers), Cooking and Mixology with Oils, and Pampering Yourself with Oils (sugar, scrubs, salt scrubs, and facials).
Class includes all sample oils (shipped weekly to participants after registering for the class) to make sugar scrub, facials, cleaning solution, and oils for stress.
Dates for “Essential Oils” will be April 16, 23 and 30, and May 7 from 4-6 p.m. The price for an individual session is $15, and $40 for all sessions.
