Vietnam Vet selected for bathroom makeover

ILION — An area veteran is receiving a free bathroom makeover, as a thank you for his service and to make life a little easier.

New York Sash has announced the first recipient of its Shower for a Soldier Bath Makeover Giveaway is Marine Corps veteran Lee Watkins. Watkins, of Ilion, was nominated by his wife, Nancy, and will be receiving a free bathroom upgrade by New York Sash. Announced in mid-September, the goal of Shower for a Soldier is to improve the life of a local Veteran experiencing hardships that hinder everyday tasks such as bathing.

“Lee is a Vietnam War Veteran and has suffered some health issues due to Agent Orange. His lack of balance and diabetic neuropathy makes it difficult to get into the bathtub to take a shower,” Nancy Watkins wrote in her nomination. “He would benefit from a larger shower with a seat, which would make his life a little easier.”

New York Sash will make this wish come true by transforming the Watkins’ bathroom into a safer, more-accessible and relaxing space with a Jacuzzi Bath Remodel tub-to-shower conversion.

“Sometimes we take it for granted what the men and women of the Armed Forces do for us, here in our country and overseas. At New York Sash, one of the ways that we can give back is with our Shower for a Soldier Giveaway. We’re very proud to be able to offer this award to a Veteran right in our local area,” said New York Sash owner Scot Hayes.

New York Sash accepted nominations of veterans through Sunday, Nov. 1. The program received dozens of nominations. Plans are in the works to repeat Shower for a Soldier Giveaway annually.
