Verona resident wins Scherz award

VERONA — Kierstyn Kahler, daughter of Jeff and Patty Kahler of Verona, is the winner of the seventh annual Fred Scherz Memorial Scholarship for Volunteer Community Service.

Verona Town Councilman Fred “Fritz” Scherz Jr. presented Kahler with a certificate of accomplishment and a check for $250.

Kahler has volunteered for the Verona Park Program, Special Olympics, Vernon-Verona-Sherrill football games, and Madison-Oneida Camp Lookout among other programs.

The VVS student has also done extensive volunteer work for her school, including various fundraisers, track meets and has baby-sat for parents during
parent-teacher organization meetings.

Kahler has been on the honor roll at VVS since her freshman year.

“I congratulate Kierstyn for not only winning the scholarship, but for also setting a great example for others to follow,” the town councilman said.

“On a personal note, I know my dad would’ve been impressed with her ongoing volunteer efforts,” said Scherz.
