Vernon opts out of cannabis sales

VERNON — At an Oct. 4 town meeting the Vernon Town Board adopted a local law to opt out of allowing cannabis dispensaries and onsite consumption that is authorized under state law.

Specifically, the law prohibits the retail sale or on premise use of cannabis in the Town of Vernon outside of the Village of Vernon, according to a notice.

The next step is putting the adopted law to a referendum.

Per state law, “If a petition in keeping with Municipal Home Rule Law filed within 45 days of October 4, 2021 objecting to enactment of the Local Law, the Town will conduct a referendum (i.e., an election) of the duly qualified voters of the Town of Vernon to determine if the October 4, 2021 Local Law will be given effect,” a notice reads.

In order to be valid, a petition must be filed within the time frame with the town clerk.
