SPRINGVILLE  Kevin VandenBerg won this week’s 65th NYS Men’s Senior Amateur Championship in two rounds ending Thursday.

The member of Beaver Meadows fired the tournament low round on day one, a 5-under 66, and carried a six-stroke lead into the final round. The three-time Michigan state champion and recent Senior Porter Cup winner turned in a 73 on Thursday, good enough to secure the title. He finished at 3-under 139 for the tournament.

The top five finishers in the Senior Amateur earned exemptions into the upcoming Mid-Amateur at Seven Oaks as well as the Men’s Amateur next year. Four players tied for second to join Vandenberg on the exemption list. Defending champion Dan Russo, of Schuyler Meadows Club; Dennis Lynch, of Nassau Players Club; Jeff Schauger, of River Oaks Golf club; and Chris Smithers, of Tuscarora Golf Club, all finished at 6-over 148.

Two local players competed in the event. Joe Hobika of Yahnundasis Golf Club was tied for 20th at 154, 15 strokes behind the winner. Michael Seifert of Rome Country Club was tied for 56th at 172.

In the 26th NYS Men’s Super Senior Amateur Championship at Springville on Thursday, Canasawacta Country Club’s Bob Branham won a playoff over Bob DeWitt, of Transit Valley Country Club.
