UTICA — The Sculpture Space art studio on Gates Street was heavily vandalized and trashed in the early morning hours on Sunday, according to studio officials.

The Utica Police Department is investigating.

Officials said a group of vandals broke into the Gates Street facility and used paint, torches, hammers and other studio items to tear through multiple rooms, breaking property, furniture and artworks. Officials said all windows, both inside and outside, have been smashed.

The bathrooms were flooded, computer equipment was destroyed, security cameras were smashed, art pieces were either partially damaged or destroyed, and several bicycles used by the artists were stolen, officials said.

According to their Facebook page, “Sculpture Space is an international artist residency that invites artists whose focus is sculpture to come to Utica to create new works and connect with the community. We provide free housing, studio space, a generous stipend to offset travel and materials, technical expertise and other support.”

The vandalism has occurred a little less than one month before the group’s annual CHAIRity Art Auction and Launch Party on Sept. 24. Sculpture Space has set up a vandalism recovery fundraiser at the website Betterworld.org under the title “Vandalism Recovery Fund.”

Utica Police officials said they are investigating the vandalism.

This is a terrible shame. It is too bad that the only funding the Leatherstocking Council's urban Boy Scout unit in Utica, NY receives is from The Indium Corporation & Macartney Family Foundation. The 8 to 11 year-olds who were arrested could certainly have benefited from a program that teaches character development.
