Utica University's Coffey earns ECAC Coach of the Year honor
Utica University men’s basketball coach Sean Coffey has earned another honor after the Pioneers’ successful season.
Coffey, who has been Utica coach since the 2016-17 season, has earned the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, the organization announced Tuesday. It is the first time he has earned the honor.
Coffey also earned the Empire 8 Conference coach of the year honors in February for the second time. He was also E8 coach of the year during the 2021-22 season.
The team finished 23-5 overall after earning its second Empire 8 regular-season title in as many seasons. The team’s 23 wins during the 2022-23 season tied the program record for wins in a single season.
Under his guidance, the Pioneers were selected to the NCAA Division III tournament for the first time since the 2006-07 season. In the tournament, Utica topped Babson College in the first round before falling to host Rowan University the next day in the second round earlier this month.
