Utican accused of attempted robbery

When a Utica man’s attempted bottle return at Cliff’s Market did not go as planned, law enforcement officials said he started trying to take merchandise from the store and got into a fight with the overnight clerk.

Police said Tyrie Sweeting, 26, went to the Cliff’s Market on Genesee Street at about 2:30 a.m. May 31 and tried returning several bottles for the nickel cash back.

Police said Sweeting became upset when the store clerk declined several of the bottles, and Sweeting started arguing with the clerk.

Police said Sweeting then walked behind the counter and started grabbing merchandise. The employee attempted to block Sweeting, and police said Sweeting shoved the clerk and punched him in the face.

Authorities said Sweeting then fled the store without any of the items he tried to grab.

Police said they identified Sweeting as the assailant. Sweeting was spotted at about 6 p.m. the same day walking along Genesee Street.

Authorities said an officer attempted to stop Sweeting, and Sweeting took off running. Officers pursued for several blocks before Sweeting was finally caught and taken into custody.

Sweeting is charged with one count of attempted third-degree robbery, police said.

He was arraigned in court and was sent to county jail in lieu of bail. He is scheduled to reappear in court.
