NEW HARTFORD — A Utica man was charged with attempting to break into a house on Homestead Road while the homeowner was inside the residence Friday afternoon.

New Hartford Police said Eric Stockwell, 23, tried to gain entry into the home, and when the homeowner woke up and showed himself, Stockwell ran away. Officers responded to the area and apprehended Stockwell shortly after he fled the scene. While being interviewed, Stockwell provided a false name, date-of-birth and address, before his real identity was revealed, police said. Stockwell was charged with second-degree attempted burglary, a class D felony, and false personation, a class B misdemeanor.

He was to be arraigned in Oneida County CAP Court.
