Utica Zoo lynx passes away
UTICA — The Utica Zoo announced the death of Canada Lynx, Breton, who brought joy and wonder to visitors and staff alike during his time at the zoo. The community may remember him from his recent participation in the Utica Zoo "PreZOOdent" campaign.
Breton's journey at the Utica Zoo began over nine years ago, capturing the hearts of all who encountered him with his majestic presence and vibrant personality. Breton was born at the New York State Zoo at Thompson Park in Watertown in May 2013, and arrived at the Utica Zoo in December 2013. In June 2020, the zoo welcomed female companion Denali, who joined Breton from the Erie Zoo following a recommendation from the Species Survival Plan, according to the zoo.
Zookeepers fondly remember Breton for his endearing "cattitude" and excellent stalking skills.
"Breton was an extraordinary animal who greatly impacted the visitors’ experiences," said Andria Heath, executive director of the Utica Zoo. "His passing leaves a void in our hearts and a deep sadness throughout the zoo community. We are grateful for the time we had with him and the opportunities he provided to connect with our visitors, fostering a passion for wildlife conservation and helping us share the story of the male lynx in the wild."
Through the loss of Breton, the Utica Zoo underscores the importance of continued efforts to protect and preserve these remarkable creatures, as well as their habitats, zoo officials say.
Breton’s companion Denali will remain at the Utica Zoo on exhibit. Zoo staff will monitor Denali for any changes in behavior, however, Canada Lynx are primarily solitary in the wild, and staff believe she will continue to thrive under their care.
