Utica woman accused of passing counterfeit cash in Lewis and Jefferson counties
A Utica woman is accused of passing counterfeit $100 bills at several Walmart stores in Lewis and Jefferson counties, according to the New York State Police.
Troopers said Starmecca K. Belton, 32, used the counterfeit bills in November and December at Walmarts in Watertown, Leray and Lowville. Following an investigation, troopers said Belton was identified and was taken into custody on Monday.
Belton is charged with three counts each of first-degree possession of a forged instrument, a class C felony, fourth-degree conspiracy, a class E felony, and petty larceny, a misdemeanor, troopers said. She was arraigned in Jefferson County Court and was sent to the Jefferson County Jail in lieu of $7,500 cash bail.
She is scheduled to reappear in court.
Troopers said the investigation remains ongoing and more arrests are possible.
