Utica University mourns death of student

UTICA — A student at Utica University passed away over the weekend from an apparent stroke, according to university officials.

John Paul “JP” Ramel, a senior construction management major, suffered a stroke on Friday and died on Sunday, according to a letter sent campus-wide by Utica University President Laura Casamento.

“The University has contacted JP’s family to extend condolences, and I ask that you keep them in your thoughts at this extraordinarily difficult time,” Casamento wrote.

Ramel is a native of Bucks County, Pennsylvania, where he volunteered with the Plumsteadville Volunteer Fire Company. While living in the Utica area, Ramel also volunteered with the New York Mills Fire Department.

“He was a bright, conscientious and humble young man who loved volunteering in the fire service and participating in other community service activities,” New York Mills Fire officials wrote on Facebook.

Counseling and support services are available for faculty and students at Utica University.
