Utica University claims men’s track title

ROCHESTER — The Utica University men’s track and field team has earned its third overall Empire 8 Conference Outdoor Championship.

The team won its first title since 2017 on Saturday in Rochester. The Pioneers were in second place after the first day and edged St. John Fisher by five points to take the top spot. Utica had a team total of 194 points. Host Nazareth placed third with 170 team points.

The Pioneers won eight individual/relay events overall over the two-day meet.

Rome Free Academy graduates Justin Swavely and Billie Mays III contributed to the team’s title. 

In the javelin, Swavely was first with a 55.22-meter mark. 

In the shot put, Mays was fourth (13.46 meters) while Swavely (13.39 meters) was fifth.

Hunter Logan, who is from Fort Plain and attended Herkimer County Community College, had a 15.98-meter toss to set a meet and facility record. The mark ranks ninth in Division III this year.

Utica’s women’s team finished third as a team in the championships.

Remsen’s Jade Dening was first in the 1,500 with a time of 4:57.90 and in 3,000-meter Steeplechase, 11:46.14 for Utica.

Camden’s Mackenzie Mix was first in the 400-meter dash (56.76), 100-meter dash (12.23) and 200-meter dash (26.08). Oriskany’s Jane Fahy was first in the shot put with a mark of 12.99 meters.
