UTICA — Utica University has its first head coach for the recently announced women’s wrestling program.

The school said in a news release Tuesday that Connor Lapresi is the coach and will start in February. Lapresi “will oversee all facets of the program including scouting, recruiting, meets and practice preparation, as well as day-to-day operations.”

“Connor’s coaching experience, knowledge of women’s wrestling along with his personal student-athlete experience wrestling at Cornell University should serve our new program well,” Utica athletic director Dave Fontaine said in a news release.

Lapresi was a two-time All-American and a four-sport star at Lansing High School, which is near Ithaca. He was a 2012 New York state champion in Freestyle and Greco-Roman at 132 pounds and finished as the state runner-up at 138 pounds in 2013. Lapresi also served as a two-year team captain of both the wrestling and football teams while also competing on the school’s cross country and track and field teams.

“I’m beyond excited to return to New York and be a part of Utica’s inaugural wrestling season,” Lapresi said in a release. “With New York leading the charge in women’s wrestling, it’s truly special to be at the very start of something. It’s my goal to create a program that will facilitate growth and opportunity for young girls across the state similar to how Binghamton, Brockport, Cornell, Ithaca, and countless other programs did for me growing up.”

Lapresi started his collegiate career at Bucknell University before competing at NCAA Division I powerhouse Cornell University until he graduated with his Bachelor of Science degree in 2018.

Lapresi returns to the Upstate New York region after being named head women’s wrestling coach at Virginia-based Ferrum College in May 2022.

Prior to Ferrum, Lapresi was the assistant coach for the men’s team at SUNY Cortland from 2021 to 2022 when he helped coach four national qualifiers and one All-American. While at Cortland, he helped coordinate the hosting the New York State Collegiate Tournament, which annually hosts 12 teams and over 200 wrestlers, according Utica’s release. Lapresi’s experience includes coaching with Doughboy Wrestling Club in Boston. It is one of the premier clubs in the New England area, according to the news release.

Utica is also beginning a men’s wrestling program that was announced in September along with a gymnastics program. Officials previously announced the sports are expected to begin during the 2023-24 academic year.

Adam Greene is the men’s wrestling coach, which the school announced in December. Danielle Cerminaro is the gymnastics coach.
