Utica teenager faces weapons charge

A Utica teenager has been charged with weapons possession following a traffic stop on Rutger Street late Monday night.

Police said there was a shots fired call Monday night on Blandina Street. A short time later, officers pulled over a motor vehicle in the 1100 block of Rutger St.

While approaching the vehicle, police said they smelled marijuana and asked the occupants of the vehicle to get out. Police said the rear seat passenger was noticed reaching for a handgun in his waistband, and the officers recovered a loaded 9mm handgun.

Nikyro Smith-Rucker, 19, of Utica, is charged with one count each of second-degree possession of a weapon, criminal possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of marijuana, police stated. Two other occupants in the vehicle were also charged with unlawful possession of marijuana, authorities said.

All three are scheduled to appear in City Court.
