Utica police union throws support behind Congressional candidate Wells in 22nd District
UTICA — The union that represents the Utica Police Department has endorsed Republican candidate Steve Wells for New York’s 22nd Congressional District, according to Wells.
Wells, of Cazenovia, announced the endorsement on Thursday of the John E. Creedon Police Benevolent Association. Wells was born and raised in Syracuse before moving to Texas, where he worked as a criminal prosecutor. In the Syracuse area, he is a co-founder of the American Food and Vending Corporation.
“I am pleased to offer Steve Wells our endorsement for New York’s 22nd Congressional District. As a former prosecutor and owner of a small business, Steve Wells possesses the know-ledge and understanding to hold this position,” said Joshua Harrington, union president.
“Public safety is a must and should be a priority with the federal government. The Utica PBA believes Steve Wells shows great support for our efforts to keep the community safe,” Harrington added. “We have a common interest in helping our community grow and prosper.”
The 22nd Congressional District includes Oneida, Madison and Onondaga counties, along with a small portion of Oswego County. The 22nd seat is currently held by Claudia Tenney, R-22, New Hartford, but she is running this year for the 24th Congressional District.
“Utica police officers work every day to keep our community safe and often make great sacrifices to protect us. It’s an honor to be backed by these brave men and women,” said Wells.
“Sadly, far-left politicians in Albany and Washington have unfairly demonized law enforcement and denigrated public safety with the ‘Defund the Police’ movement and policies that embolden repeat criminals and make it harder for officers to do their jobs,” Wells said.
“In Congress, I will not tolerate these reckless policies. As a former criminal prosecutor, I firmly believe in law and order and empowering law enforcement,” the GOP candidate added.
In the 22nd District, Wells will be up against candidate Brandon Williams in the Republican Primary on Aug. 23.
The Democratic Primary is also Aug. 23.
