Utica police investigate shooting

UTICA — A passerby in Utica was struck in the back by gunfire at South Street and Kossuth Avenue very early Sunday morning, according to the Utica Police Department.

No arrests have been made so far.

Police said there was a report of shots fired on South Street around 1:20 a.m. Sunday. Authorities said a group of four were driving in the area when a passenger inside the vehicle was struck in the back by the errant gunfire. The four people do not believe the shots were intended for them, according to police.

The woman was taken to St. Elizabeth Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, authorities said.

The investigation remains ongoing as to who fired the gun and whether or not there was an intended target, police said. Anyone with information on the incident, and anyone who may have home security camera footage from the area, is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 315-223-3556.
