Utica plans pair of new dog parks
UTICA — As the city’s parks system continues to receive multiple upgrades, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced two new dog parks will be coming to T.R. Proctor Park and Cinderella Field.
“The fact that a city of our size did not have a dog park, now we’ll have two, just shows us how far we’ve come in the last 11 years,” Palmieri said. “I’m very proud of the fact we’re able to do the things that had not been done in the past and it’s based on what the people’s requests were.”
Palmieri believes the significant upgrades the city’s parks have been receiving, including implementing new dog parks, will allow for the city’s residents, as well as tourists, to enjoy what Utica has to offer.
“This is an asset for our residents, but this is [also] an asset for people coming throughout to utilize our parks,” the mayor added.
T.R. Proctor Park’s dog park will be equipped with a shade pavilion, benches, a field hydrant and water fountains for both dogs and people. North Utica’s Cinderella Field dog park will be equipped with separate enclosures for large and small dogs.
Sixth District Councilor Joseph Betrus, who’s district includes Cinderella Field, has been a staunch advocate for implementing a dog park in the city after listening to requests from his constituents.
“North Utica has been taking about having a dog park for a long time and I’m grateful for the opportunity to help deliver a beautiful one,” Betrus said. “Our pets are part of our families and this will be a place where families can come together in a beautiful setting.”
All dogs entering the dog park will have to be licensed and up to date on vaccines. The dog parks will follow the city of Utica’s park schedule and will be closed from dusk until dawn.
Funding for the construction of both dog parks has been provided by the Utica Prosperity Initiative and funds from the American Rescue Plan Act, totaling around $1 million.
Construction for both dog parks are expected to begin within the coming weeks and are expected to be completed by next spring.
