Utica MASL team adds experience with Gurson
UTICA — Utica City FC has added some experience to the roster for the upcoming season.
The Major Arena Soccer League team announced the addition of Gordy Gurson, who has an impressive resume as a top-scoring midfielder during eight seasons playing in the indoor game.
Gurson adds some scoring punch for Utica, which averaged nearly five goals per game during the 2021-22 season.
In eight MASL seasons with seven teams, the 30-year-old Gurson has totaled 188 goals in 149 games. Last season with Milwaukee he finished with 14 goals and 18 points. He played a total of 20 matches between the 2019-20 and 2021 seasons as injuries limited him in the former season.
His best statistical season was in 2018-19 with Orlando when he scored 34 goals and had 24 assists.
Most notably, Gurson was the MASL Rookie of the Year in 2014-2015, when he scored 46 goals and added 18 assists for Tacoma and St. Louis.
As of Wednesday, Gurson was one of 14 players listed on the team’s roster for the upcoming season. The others are another new addition in Dylan Hundelt (joining after three seasons with Harrisburg), co-captains Bo Jelovac and Nate Bourdeau as well as Tim Goldman, Logan Roberts, Domenico Vitale, Cristhian Segura, Ronaldinho Diniz, Andrew Coughlin, Quenton Swift, Juan Alava, Keaton Woods and Rafa Godoi.
Utica, which finished 10-14 overall and missed the playoffs last season, is set to have a new coach for the 2022-23 season. The 42-year-old Hewerton Moreira was named the new coach in May.
The MASL — which has 14 teams — has not released a full 2022-23 schedule as of Wednesday. Utica is set to play 24 games (12 home, 12 away) as a member of the Eastern Conference. The league said the schedule will begin on Dec. 2 for most teams, though also noted some teams could start the weekend before.
