UTICA - The man accused of shooting an acquaintance in the back of the head outside a Fastrac store pleaded not guilty in Utica City Court on Monday, according to court officials.

Anthony Willis, 38, pleaded not guilty before City Court Judge Joseph Saba to one count each of second-degree murder, second-degree possession of a weapon, seventh-degree possession of a controlled substance and two counts of third-degree possession of a controlled substance, court officials said.

His case was scheduled for a felony hearing on Wednesday.

Utica Police said Willis was in the back seat of a car parked outside the Fastrac on Genesee Street when he shot front seat passenger Aaron Higgs in the back of the head at about 2 p.m. Sunday.

Police said Willis, Higgs and a third man had spent most of the day driving around together and the three were acquainted.

Police said Willis fled the scene on foot and was taken into custody a short time later.

Police said Willis was found with large quantities of crack cocaine and powdered cocaine, along with more than $40,000 in cash.
