UTICA — A 21-year-old man was found with a loaded handgun in Utica on Tuesday, according to the Utica Police Department.

Police said they were dispatched to Oneida Square at about 10:45 p.m. Thursday after a woman said a man had threatened her with a handgun and then stuffed the gun into a backpack. Police said a New York State trooper was on patrol in the area and located 21-year-old DeAndre Watkins, of Utica, who matched the description and was carrying a backpack.

While Watkins was being questioned, police said they uncovered an open arrest warrant out of the Village of Ilion. Watkins was taken into custody on the warrant and his backpack was searched. A loaded, 9mm handgun was found in the backpack, police said.

Watkins is charged with one count each of second-degree possession of a weapon and criminal possession of a firearm, police said. He is scheduled to appear in Utica City Court.
