Utica man charged with DWI following crash on Thruway

UTICA — A Utica man was charged with drunken driving with a young child in his vehicle following a crash on the Thruway in Ontario County, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers said Michael D. Richlin, 56, of Utica, was westbound in the driving lane at about 7:15 p.m. June 17 when he shifted into the passing late, and his 2019 Nissan Frontier struck a 2020 Kia, driven by Edward J. Miller, 65, of Honeoye. Richlin’s Nissan continued off the south shoulder and overturned.

A 6-year-old child was in Richlin’s vehicle, and that child was turned over to a responsible third party, troopers said. Richlin was treated at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester for non-life threatening injures, troopers said.

Once released from the hospital, troopers said Richlin was charged with driving while intoxicated, aggravated DWI for having a child in the vehicle, endangering the welfare of a child and reckless driving, troopers said. He was released on appearance tickets to Phelps Town Court.
