UTICA — A Utica man is accused of attempting to escape custody by kicking out a window on a county jail transport van, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

Sheriff’s deputies said Idris Brown, 24, was being taken back to the jail after an appearance in Utica City Court at about 11:45 a.m. Aug. 9 when he kicked out a window on the transport van and tried to climb out while the van was still moving. The corrections officers stopped the van and were able to prevent Brown from getting out, authorities stated.

Brown was in custody on charges of assault, robbery and weapons possession following a shooting on Neilson Street in Utica on July 23, according to law enforcement records.

Following an investigation, Brown was charged with attempted first-degree escape and third-degree mischief, both class E felonies, deputies said. He was returned to the jail and is scheduled to reappear in Utica City Court.
