Utica curling team claims championship
WHITESBORO — A Utica team won the United States Woman’s Curling Association National Championship for the first time in more than 50 years.
Utica 1 defeated Blackhawk Curling Club 10-6 in the event last weekend at the Utica Curling Club in Whitesboro. The last time that a Utica earned the championship was 1967.
The Utica 1 team was led by skip Anne Stuhlman and included Liz Kaido, Melissa Foote, Erlene Puleo, who subbed for injured Audrey Foot. The team was awarded the A Event trophy, a silver-plated punch bowl sponsored by the Wauwatosa Granites Curling Club.
The USWCA’s annual tournament, which is in its 73rd year, included 32 teams from 12 states. The USWCA has more than 85 member clubs and almost 5,000 individual members.
The B Event finals had St. Paul CC prevailing in an extra end 7-6 over Detroit 1. Chicago defeated Four Seasons CC 10-4 in the C Event finals and Madison CC overcame Bowling Green 11-4 in the D event finals. Trophies for each of the events and the A Event runner-up are sponsored by the five original founding clubs of the USWCA.
