Utica City FC earned a 6-4 Major Arena Soccer League road win against the Baltimore Blast Saturday then lost 5-4 in overtime at home Sunday against the Harrisburg Heat. The one point in the standings UCFC earned Sunday was not quite enough to clinch a playoff spot.

On Sunday, Utica’s Darren Toby scored with 14 seconds in regulation to set up overtime. In overtime, Harrisburg’s Dominic Francis scored the winner.

UCFC earned a point in the loss, and has two regular season games left to battle for playoff seeding. The team sits in fourth place in Eastern Conference, two points ahead of Kansas City.

Taylor Bond opened the scoring for Utica City, as he worked down the right wing and beat goalkeeper Chase Vosvick far side. Aljeandro Chavez answered five minutes later to tie the game at one.

A third chance effort from Nilton De Andrade helped create Utica’s second goal. He started with his feet, and then a header, and finally finished on a jumping kick to bury a goal in the final seconds of the quarter. It was 2-1 UCFC after one.

Lesia Thetsane got the only goal of the second quarter for Harrisburg.

UCFC gained the lead in the second half. Bo Jelovac slid the ball over to a cutting Dylan Hundelt who finished it. Harrisburg squared things up again, as Thetsane came sprinting up the middle, got a pass off the wall and rifled it through to tie the game. Toward the end of the frame, Francis got a long pass from midfield, came down the left side of the field and snuck it in the near post. Utica City trailed by a goal at the end of the third.

The overtime loss came a day after Utica beat second place Baltimore.

UCFC jumped out to a 2-1 lead early. Two minutes in, De Andrade got the scoring started. UCFC peppered the Baltimore cage with shots, and De Andrade got the first one through. Two minutes later, Baltimore’s Juan Pereira knocked one past Andrew Coughlin to tie the game. Issak Somow would answer for Utica City with a bullet off a feed from Jelovac. UCFC led 2-1. Stefan Mijatovic followed up with a goal from the top of the box that gave Utica City a two-goal lead.

Taylor Bond would score the only goal of the second quarter. He received a pass from De Andrade who was darting down the right wing. It was a one touch Bond and UCFC took a 4-1 lead into halftime.

Baltimore got the first tally of the second half. With 6:47 left, Pereira sprinted to the top of the box and beat Coughlin to his right. Utica City answered when Coughlin rolled a pass the length of the field to Gordy Gurson. Gurson fought through a defender to score and make it 5-2. That would be the score entering the fourth. With 9:40 to go, Tony Donatelli set up at the top of box and rifled it into the cage to cut the lead to two. Just over a minute later, the lead was reduced to one by Patrick Thompson.

Coughlin made a few big saves in the final five minutes. Taylor Bond found the back of the net while Baltimore had a six attacker out, and UCFC sealed the 6-4 win.

Utica City’s final regular season home game is April 1 against Baltimore. The team plays at Florida on Sunday, March 26.
