Utica City FC sets preseason event for Nov. 27

UTICA — Utica City FC is getting in on the World Cup spirits.
The Major Arena Soccer League team announced an event set for noon Sunday, Nov. 27, known as World Cup Celebration: USA vs. World Preseason match.
The team is said there will be a match at the Adirondack Bank Center “as we break up into team USA and World.” The team is set to play before the Spain-Germany group stage game. The team said after the preseason game, the players will watch the World Cup match at 72 Tavern and Grill, which is attached the downtown Utica arena.
Tickets for Utica City FC’s preseason match are listed at $6.50 on the Empire State Tickets website. The team said season-ticket members get into the game for free.
The team said the game will feature:
• Opening Ceremonies described as being “World Cup Style.”
• Jersey Giveaway Postgame
The team — led by new coach Hewerton Moreira — is scheduled to play its opening game on Saturday, Dec. 3 at Baltimore. The team’s first home game is for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11.

Tavernese returns
Utica announced recently that fan favorite forward Joey Tavernese is back for another season.
The 33-year-old Queens native led Utica in goals (19), assists (10) and points (29) last season while playing in 24 games.
This will be his third season with Utica after a two-season sojourn with Florida. He also played three seasons with organization when it was still based in Syracuse before the move east to Utica.
Tavernese, known for his elaborate goal celebrations and Peter Pan-like spirit, has scored 167 goals in his time in the MASL.
Tavernese is the most recent addition for Utica, which has a mix of returners and new faces for the 2022-23 season. Utica, which finished 10-14 overall and missed the playoffs last season, parted ways with coach Ryan Hall after the season.
As of Tuesday, Tavernese is among 18 players listed on the team’s online roster for the upcoming season. There is Thomas R. Proctor High School grad Issak Somow (two goals last season with Utica) as well as newcomers in Gordy Gurson and Dylan Hundelt — who each have previous MASL experience — in addition to co-captains in forward Bo Jelovac and midfielder Nate Bourdeau.
The roster includes: forwards Tim Goldman, Juan Alava, defenders Logan Roberts and Domenico Vitale and midfielders Cristhian Segura, Quenton Swift, Ronaldinho Diniz, Rafa Godoi and goalkeepers Andrew Coughlin and Brian Wilkins. Keaton Woods and Ricky Alves are also on the roster.
