Utica 5 wins 66th Cobb Mixed Bonspiel

WHITESTOWN — The Utica Curling Club featured 36 teams in the 66th Cobb Mixed Bonspiel over the weekend and Utica 5 won 13-5 over Bucks County 2 in the A Event.

The match turned in the fifth end when skip Mike Kessler made a difficult angle raised take out on his last shot to take five and an 8-3 lead. With their victory Utica 5 took home the Presidents Bowl while Bucks County 2 was presented with the Curlers Cooler.

The tournament is an Invitational but Utica teams are selected based on their performance in the club’s Mixed Championship.

Utica 5 is skip Mike Kessler, Anne Stuhlman, Mike DeGironimo and Lis DeGironimo. Bucks County 2 was represented by skip Dan Pearson, Julie Yeager, Dave Yeager and Cassie Drogose.

The B Event finals featured Rochester defeating Utica 2. The winning team of skip Pat Costello, Caitlin Pulli, Brian Costello and Maire Costello was presented with the Silver Tassie. Utica 2 was represented by skip Conrad Law (chairman of the Cobb), Knyoca Law, Tim Crofton and Natalie Shelton.

In the C Event the Ice Box Trophy was presented to Hamilton Victoria and its rink skipped by Dan Aquin, with Erin Jamula, Ty Howie and Hayley Hopkins. the Runner-up team Chaska Minnesota CC was skipped by Blake Hagberg and accompanied by Emily Schweitzer, Guy Perera and Jeanine Perera.

The D Event winner was Burlington 2. The team of skip Andy Scott, Mary Scott, Jeff Germond and Sally Germond was presented with the Friendship Trophy. Utica 1 was the runner-up, skipped by Jason Golubski and accompanied by Audrey Foote, Eric Krumme and Melissa Foote.

Starting on Thursday the club will be hosting the Grand National Curling Clubs 82nd Francis Dykes Memorial Bonspiel for men with five years or less experience. The Dykes Bonspiel will include 57 teams from all over the eastern U.S. The finals will be at 11:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The public is invited to attend and view the competition but must show proof of two COVID-19 vaccinations (or one of Johnson & Johnson). Selected matches for the Dykes Bonspiel will be streamed and can be accessed at the club’s website.
