The unemployment rate in the Utica-Rome area declined from 4.9% in August 2021 to 3.9% in August 2022.

However, the unemployment rate rose slightly, from 3.8% in July.

Change in Non-farm Jobs since September 2021

For the 12-month period ending September 2022, the non-farm job count in the Utica-Rome MSA increased 2,900, or 2.4 percent, to 122,700, according to figures supplied by the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Private sector employment rose 1,600, or 1.8 percent, to 92,200, the Bureau of Labor Statistics added.

Job gains were posted in:

• Government, an increase (plus) 1,300;

• Leisure and hospitality, plus 500;

• Education and health services, plus 300;

• Trade, transportation, and utilities, plus 300;

• Manufacturing, plus 200;

• Other services, plus 200; and

• Professional and business services, plus 100.

County rankings

  • Oneida County ranked at 42 of 62 counties in the state for its unemployment rate which was 3.2% in September, a decline from 3.9% in August.
  • Madison County ranked at 19 with an unemployment rate of 2.8% a decline from 3.3% in August.
  • Herkimer County ranked 47 at 3.3%, a decline from 4.0% in August; and Lewis County ranked 19 at 2.8%, a decline from 3.7% in August, according to the state Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • The national unemployment rate fell to 3.5% in September 2022, matching July’s 29-month low and remaining below market expectations of 3.7%.
  • The number of unemployed persons nationally declined by 261,000 to 5.75 million in September.
